Ten Great Vows

The Ten Great Vows of Universal Worthy (Samantabhadra) Bodhisattva are the quintessence of the cultivation of Buddhahood by Bodhisattvas.

As indicated in the sutra, if a Bodhisattva does not cultivate this Ten Great Vows, one will not attained perfect Buddhahood. The essence of the Ten Great Vows is the perfect magnanimous practice which embraces all phenomena in the universe. One who practices this magnanimous mind to cultivate all wholesome Dharma is tantamount to practising the Universal Worthy Bodhisattva's Ten Great Vows.

The Ten Great Vows of Universal Worthy (Samantabhadra) Bodhisattva are:

  • Respect all Buddhas;
  • Praise the Tathagabha;
  • Make abundant offerings;
  • Repent misdeeds and hindrance;
  • Rejoice at others' merits and virtues;
  • Request the Buddha to turn the Dharma wheel;
  • Request the Buddha to remain in the world;
  • Follow the teachings of the Buddha at all times;
  • Accommodate and benefit all sentient beings;
  • Transfer merits and virtues universally.
