Pictograph

Pictograph first appeared on painted pottery more than 7,000 years ago. The painted pottery that was unearthed from the ruins site of Xi An, the capital of Tang Dynasty, in a town called Half Hill and is believed to be more than 6,000 years old. There were pictures carved or drawn on it.

Other painted pottery of the same period was found on Da Wen Ko archeology site, which is believed to be more than 5,500 years old. The pottery had coloured drawings and was carved with pictographic characters.

From these pictographs and symbols Chinese characters sprouted. They were also the primitive writings of China.
